Safety assist technologies
Designed to avoid accidents altogether and minimise the severity of the crash, autonomous or semi-autonomous safety features such as Dual Sensor Brake Support, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control, assist you as the driver. In the Suzuki Swift, you will find the following safety assist technologies under collision warning and avoidance, braking and stability, speed alert, and advanced lighting.
Collision warning and avoidance
Dual Sensor Brake Support II
The Swift's millimetre-wave radar and a monocular camera detect vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians directly or diagonally ahead of the vehicle. Using information from these sensors, Swift can detect a potential collision and act in any of the following ways depending on the situation:
- Alert the driver with an audio and visual warning.
- Deploy brake assist to increase the braking force if the risk of collision is high and the driver panic brakes.
- Apply strong automatic braking if the risk of collision increases further.
Adaptive cruise control
Adaptive cruise control helps reduce driver fatigue on long trips and when driving in traffic. When there is a vehicle in front of you, Swift's adaptive cruise control system uses millimetre-wave radar and monocular camera to automatically maintain your following distance depending on the setting selected and vehicle speed.
On the CVT Auto, the adaptive cruise control includes a stop-and-go function, provided the vehicle is stopped less than 2 seconds, otherwise the system disengages. While on the Manual, it disengages at speeds of approximately 30 km/h or less.
Lane keep assist
When the adaptive cruise control is activated, lane keep assist helps you maintain the Swift's position in the centre of the lane. If the function senses that an adjacent vehicle or structure such as roadwork barrier or other obstacles are too close to your vehicle, it provides steering assistance to help maintain a safe distance.
Lane departure warning
At 60km/h or faster this system predicts the Swift's path and if you are drifting, vibrates the steering wheel and gives you a visual warning.
Lane departure prevention
When driving, lane departure prevention detects the left and right lane lines and predicts the Swift's path. If you begin to drift from the lane due to driver inattention, the system alerts you by sounding an audio alert and vibrating the steering wheel. If the system determines there is still a high probability of lane departure, it provides steering assistance to help you return to the centre of the lane.
Blind spot monitor
Lane changing at speeds above 15km/h is made safer in the Swift by two rear mounted side radar sensors capable of detecting vehicles located in or approaching the rear blind spots on either side of the vehicle. When another vehicle is detected, a warning LED icon is illuminated in the Swift's exterior mirror. If you as the driver indicate to change lanes, a flashing LED icon is accompanied by a warning sound alert (RSC).
Weaving alert
This system in the Swift calculates your driving pattern and issues audio and visual warnings if it detects you're 'wandering' due to driver fatigue, for example.
Hill hold control
Hill starts are easy as the Swift's brake is automatically applied until you move forward, preventing you rolling backwards.
Reverse camera
The Swift's 9-inch touchscreen display includes a built-in reversing camera with visual guidelines to help you park and reverse safely.
Rear parking proximity sensors
Parking is even easier with ultrasonic sensors in the Swift's rear bumper that detect obstacles and send you a warning you can both see and hear.
Rear cross traffic alert
Rear cross traffic alert assists you when manoeuvering out of parking spaces where your vision is obscured by alerting you visually on the multi information display and sounding a warning alarm. When reversing at speeds of up to 8km/h, Swift uses two rear mounted side radar sensors to alert you of approaching vehicles on either side (RSC).
Braking and stability
ESP
Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) helps you stay in control of your Swift when you are cornering by counteracting understeer and oversteer. It also improves traction and reduces skidding whatever the road surface conditions.
ABS with EBD
Braking force on each wheel is automatically adjusted in relation to the available grip to provide the right amount of pressure to bring the vehicle to a safe, controlled stop. Swift features dynamic ventilated front disc brakes and rear drums.
Brake assist
Brake Assist adjusts braking force when the brake pedal hasn't been fully depressed in an emergency braking situation. Based on the speed at which the brake pedal is depressed, the onboard computer determines whether it is an emergency braking situation and adds brake force to achieve optimum deceleration.
Speed alert
Traffic sign recognition
Traffic-sign recognition is a safety tech system that recognises selected traffic signs and relays the information displayed on the sign to the Swift's instrument cluster. This function can identify speed limit, stop, and 'do not enter' signs.
Speed limit icons can be set to give different visual warnings if the posted speed limit is exceeded, including, if needed an audio alert sound if the speed continues to be exceeded.
When adaptive cruise control is enabled and the traffic sign recognises a speed limit sign that is less than the speed you are travelling, the traffic sign icon will display with a down arrow. Press and hold the 'RESET -' switch to reduce your speed to the recommended speed limit. You can also increase your speed to the traffic sign detected speed limit by pressing and holding the 'RESET +' switch.
Advanced lighting
High beam assist
At 40km/h or faster, Swift's high beam assist automatically switches the headlamps between high and low beam depending on the presence of other vehicles and the lighting environment.
Daytime running lamps
Built into the headlamps, the energy-saving LED daytime running lamps automatically turn on with the engine, emitting an even line of light to remain noticeable to oncoming traffic.
Auto levelling headlamps
The Swift's auto levelling system automatically adjusts the direction of the beam from the headlamps so it is continually pointing at the road no matter the position of the vehicle.
Auto light-sensing headlamps
Depending on the level of ambient brightness, the Swift's auto light-sensing headlamps will automatically turn on and off.
Fog lamp
The Swift's rear fog lamp helps increase your noticeability in dense fog.
Guide Me light
When you turn off your Swift, the headlamps continue to illuminate the road for a short while after you get out. When the doors are unlocked with the remote, the headlamps turn on to lead you to your vehicle.
Structural integrity
In the event of a crash, a sound structure is vital to protecting you and your passengers. The Swift's structural integrity is designed to provide enhanced passenger safety by absorbing and dispersing crash energy, maintaining the cabin's shape, and preventing parts of the car from causing injury.
HEARTECT platform
The Swift's HEARTECT next-generation platform features a state-of-the-art, high-rigidity frame using 'Ultra & advanced high tensile steel (UHSS & AHSS). Its smoothly curving continuous shape effectively disperses impact energy in the case of a collision. The crumple zones are carefully designed to fold, absorb and dissipate collision energy and fewer joints mean less reinforcements are required, dispersing this energy more efficiently.
The new-generation platform also advances fundamental automotive functions like cruising, turning and stopping to the next level.
Pedestrian protection
To mitigate impact on a pedestrian in the event of contact, the Swift's energy-absorbing structures are adopted in areas such as the front bonnet, cowl top, wipers and front bumper.
Occupant protection
The steering column, dash, roof pillars, pedals and floor panels will not move excessively, where they are more likely to injure the occupants. Doors will remain closed during the crash and will be able to be opened after the crash to assist quick rescue.
Pedal release mechanism
The pedal release mechanism in the Swift prevents the brake (and clutch) pedal from being pushed back towards the driver and mitigates impact on the leg during a frontal collision.
Passive safety features
Passive safety features activate as required during an accident, working to minimse damage and reduce the risk of injury during the time of impact.
SRS advanced airbags
Extra protection in a collision is provided by the Swift's Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) front, side and curtain airbags.
The front air bags for the driver and passenger deploy when a moderate or severe frontal impact is detected, minimising the impact to the head and chest. Curtain and front side air bags are provided for side impact collisions, mitigating the impact to head and chest areas of the occupants. SRS airbags are designed to work in conjunction with properly worn seatbelts.
Electronic Locking Retractor (ELR) seatbelts
The Swift combines three-point ELR seatbelts with pretensioners and force limiters to prevent or limit the forces of a collision.
Three-point seatbelts incorporate both a lap and sash belt spreading the load over the chest, pelvis and shoulders. Pretensioners allow the seat belt to freely extend and retract with occupant movement, locking the belt during a sudden stop or upon impact. The force limiter works in conjunction with the pretensioner, gradually releasing the force applied to the chest of occupants.
Seatbelt reminders
A warning light on the Swift's instrument panel and a buzzer remind the driver and front passenger to fasten their seatbelts. A warning light also informs the driver when rear passengers have not fastened theirs.
Head restraints
The Swift's adjustable head restraints attached to the top of each seat limit the rearward movement of an occupant's head in a collision.
Child seat tether anchorages
Top tether anchorages in the Swift are upper anchorage points over the back of the seat enabling child restraints to be adequately secured to the vehicle.
Please consult with the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) for the latest requirements for using child restraints in New Zealand and follow the instructions provided by the child seat manufacturer.
Child seat ISOFIX anchorages
The ISOFIX child seat attachment anchorages makes it easier to securely install a compatible child seat by pushing the connector, mounted underneath the child seat, into the attachment point on the vehicle side.
